Trauma-Informed Therapy Rooted in Safety, Support, and Empowerment

At Affirm Counseling, we know that life experiences can shape the way you feel about yourself, your relationships, and the world around you. Sometimes those experiences create patterns of anxiety, sadness, grief, or self-doubt that are hard to move past, even when you want to.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of the therapies we offer to help with these struggles. EMDR can bring relief from the weight of painful memories and negative beliefs, allowing you to feel more calm, confident, and present in your daily life. Our role is to walk beside you in this process with compassion and support, so that you can move toward healing at a pace that feels right for you.

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a research-based therapy designed to help the brain heal from distressing memories and beliefs. When overwhelming events are not fully processed, they can get “stuck” in the nervous system. This often leads to ongoing triggers, strong emotional reactions, and negative self-perceptions.

EMDR helps your brain reprocess these experiences so they lose their intensity and no longer disrupt daily life. It is most widely known for treating trauma, but it is also used for anxiety, depression, grief, phobias, and struggles with self-esteem. The goal is not to erase what happened, but to help your brain file those memories in a healthier way, so they feel like something that is truly in the past.

How Does EMDR Work?

During an EMDR session, your therapist guides you through a structured process that involves recalling aspects of a memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds. Scientifically, this appears to help the brain re-activate its natural healing process, similar to what happens during REM sleep when the brain processes daily experiences.

As the memory is reprocessed, the emotional charge connected to it decreases, and new, more balanced beliefs can take its place. You remain fully present and in control throughout, and you do not need to relive painful details in order to heal. Over time, people often feel lighter, calmer, and more resilient as those once-overwhelming experiences lose their grip.

Who Can Benefit from EMDR?

EMDR therapy is highly effective for individuals who have experienced trauma, including:

  •  Childhood abuse or neglect
  •  Post-traumatic stress (PTSD) and complex trauma
  • Anxiety, panic attacks, or persistent fear
  • Loss, grief, and unresolved sorrow
  • Sexual, physical or emotional assault
  • Ongoing feelings of shame or low self-worth
  • Emotional neglect and relational wounds

EMDR helps gently process difficult memories, reduce emotional overwhelm, and reconnect with a renewed sense of safety, strength, and connection to self.
